I just bumped into Otam last night when we were both doing a shoot for my friend Haziq's skool project. They shot us doin each bout 4 songs acoustic. Before the actual shoot me and Otam had a lil jamming session in the "make up" room..it was fun! Anyways, here is one soul brother who has a mean throaty voice and a knack for writing superb tunes on his beaten classical guitar. Having lived in Canada for 6 years before returning to Malaysia, he is one of the best from the singer songwriter circle! Always humble and a joy to talk to..now kids, that is the recipe for longevity in the music scene. Enough of your rockstar posterings..hehe..What can i say, come and check out the dude live! We mite even do a jammin session..Otam+Slowjaxx..haha

JEROME KUGAN
10 Things About Jerome:
1. Jerome sings and plays guitar, shakers and sometimes has a laptop as his band. He is a self-taught musician and can't read notes for shit.
2. He originally comes from Kota Kinabalu, which is situated on the island of Borneo. He's been based in KL since 2000.
3. He started writing poetry from the age of 14 and still does. Currently preparing his poetry collection "Imaginary Poems" for publication in 2009.
4. His early idols include Tina Turner, Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega.
5. His current idols are Bjork, David Sylvian, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Kate Bush, Scritti Politti, Autechre and Marissa Nadler.
6. He started making music in 1996, at age 20, when he was studying in Australia, with band called C.U.N.T. which was a Casio-based punk band. It lasted for four gigs then imploded. Later he collaborated with Alien Headspace and Futuretro as vocalist. Then set up a shortlived studio band with Elena Williams and Susan Cunningham called WilKuCunn (ha ha ha). Long time ago... duuude...
7. He currently works as media manager for The Annexe Gallery at Central Market Annexe. He was previously sub-editor for KLue and Junk magazines. Jerome is actually trained as a writer. He has a degree in Professional Writing from the University of Canberra, Australia. Yep, you read that right! Six years in fucking Canberra!
8. He won two Cameronian Arts Awards in 2005 for music he composed for Ops Ophelia, a play directed by Rohaizad Suaidi.
9. He is one-third of Troubadours Enterprise, a company that organises singer songwriter gigs around KL, including KL Sing Song. The other two thirds are singer songwriters Azmyl Yunor and Tan Sei Hon. They joke a lot.
10. He released his solo debut album "Songs For A Shadow" in April 2008. It got him nominated for Best Pop Vocalist at the 1st VIMA 2009. Currently, JK is working on writing new songs for his second album tentatively titled "City Of Mud

TENDERFIST

There's two ways i can describe this band. One is that they write awesome forward thinking music. The other is that they are made up of super cool cats! I have known Nazri since i moved to KL 4 years ago when he was still under the moniker Joe Ribut dan Sidang-Sidang Petualang..I had loved the sax and noise drenched bleeps he was twiddling with back then! He was one of the guys besides Reza Salleh who actually invited me to play at their gigs and i would always be thankful to them. Now, back to the band! These guys dabble in electronic janggle tunes which are sweet n dark at the same time..backed by beats and a floor tom beaten like a heartbroken caveman. Reminds me of JAMC on a sunday afternoon stroll..haha..Thanks blats for finding the time to lend us support despite the impending birth of Nazri's baby! Like i said to him, fathers-to-be unite! A must see band!

Gracing the stage formerly known as The Teh Gayong Lepak Stage will be these guys known simply as "V". Having been around since the mid 90's back in SG, they have been keepin a low profile till recently when they released their album filled with a mix of folk/rock and punk Malay gems. Their ranks boasts members of Lion City Surf punks Force Vomit plus a gang of Lo key underground scenesters. Get ready to be blown away by their heartfelt songwriting and genuine lyrical play.

Crackerjack

First time i saw these boys were onstage at the Causeway Battle gig organised by Ali and the OVC Crew from JB..Their song Lion City Gang is my personal favourite i must say. What better way to unleash these young lads to a bigger audience than at our very own gig. Mixing garage and punk with a good mix of aggro vocals, i must say they could be one of the young bands emerging from the Lion City to look out for besides their current batch of peers from bands like The Rejeks and Lovejets whom i would love to invite if ever i get the chance or time to organise another gig. I guess the old and jaded scenestars should learn a thing or two from the young ones!

"Funk, soul and psychedelic music."

These are the many few things that can best described the trio from Lion City, Spacedays.

With a mission to re-create the 70's soul/funk fever back in Asia, the trio consisting of Mamat Modjo ( guitars/vocals ), Andi Rahmat ( bass/vocals ) and Shakir ( drums/vocals ), are going at the scene with a big bang!!

What started out as a side project, evolves into a spectacular catastrophic turn of events and from then on, the "Space" frontier begins. With influences from the classic Motown soul and funk, along with the tripping colour scenes of Jimi Hendrix Experiences,David Bowie & Ziggy Stardust,Issac Hayes & James Brown and the direct Rock 'n' Roll approach of Dr.Feelgood, the boys sought out to create what was thought to be the new school of old school soul.

Many months have been spent in the studio perfecting their unique sound and approach to their music and now they are ready to take over the world!

Well , personally i have been given a rare preview of their tracks and i was blown away...Catch them live onstage at disko papan versus clef tunes this 23rd jan!

I saw them live for the first time on the chillout stage at Rock The World recently..they played a few sets before me. Wanted to chat em up but was too busy. Good thing was my mate Ethaya from Cloth n Clef already had them in mind for our event. Some mite say that they sound a wee bit similar to Arcade Fire or this or that...but what is originality nowadays? If it's a bunch of mates who share the same frequency in music and are having the time of their lives, then that is all that matters.That's the spirit of rockenroll. I think they are an interesting bunch who will find their sound as they tread the road less travelled by most Malaysian bands.

What better way to start off the year with a rockin gig that'll bleed your eardrums? Yes, Disko Papan is back, this time round even better with us collaborating with Clef Tunes. As usual, this is a D.I.Y gig where bands from both Singapore and Malaya share the same stage. Proceeds from door sales will be split among bands. We have no Koprat Keparat sponsors so what you pay is what they get. So, we are hoping to lock down both upcoming and established bands from both sides of the causeway for your listening pleasure. Do not expect any radio fodder on the bill nor your usual headliners. If you are in for something different, then come and join us. Further updates will be announced soon like who's on the bill and ticket pricing, so do keep an eye out. Definitely it will be a monster line up of bands from various genres coming together to give you a good good time...we are still on the lookout for the kl bands....so any suggestions do give us a hit...the date of event might clash with urbanscapes(yeah, we just found that out last night)but like they said, the show must go on...and if u like the underground then this ones for u...we decided that since a lot of the singapore bands really wanna rock kl, might as well we do one whole day affair..the timing will be confirmed soon...if u want a different feel from what urbanscapes has to offer then do find time to check this out..we definitely have no capacity to fight against the big festivals with the backing of giant corporations for we are a D.I.Y street team and what we strive for is an option to what else there is on the plate..the bands will be travelling at their own costs and accommodation and this is purely for the music..the more people come n support the more the bands will get paid from the ticket sales..so we are really hoping that it will be worth it in the end for the bands...and that everyone gets to enjoy our version of what music is..we are not selling or promoting coolness/fashion/hipness or trend..but rather hardworking musicians who have strong beliefs in their musical form..and most important respect for one another..like i said..feel free to suggest any bands in kl and we will definitely try n check them out..This is a no headliner festival of sorts for we are all equals.There will be a door charge but we will definitely make it as affordable as possible..do not worry..we wont leave a hole in your pockets.. Nikotina busted our asses doing the props at Cloth n Clef for their first Hallows Eve party.Workin on a fixed budget, we helped the best we could for our friends at CnC. Everything was built or made from scratch..hands on..we sprayed, painted, foamed,dressed,hung and cobwebbed and conceptualised the look for the club. Punters said the decor was the best they've seen in Changkat Bukit Bintang..so we kinda happy with that yeah..pat on the back.. we had gene simmons in chains...Kurt Cobain rotting away hanging on the blackened walls..Amy Winehouse stoned and dethroned in Rehab..and even wacko the Jacko with his teddy bear perving on the underaged..we spent the whole nite setting up till way near doors opening and was really dead tired..looking like zombies..haha..i managed to shower and don my mil mascaras wrestling mask...waited for aimee(nikotina) to arrive frm another modelling job...hung out with the boys and went onstage to play our set..all donning wrestling masks ..it was fun..Nadd (nikotina)was tired too but he managed to shoot the band on dv cam..haha..thought the days of dvd tapes were over..in all it was a crazy hallows eve nite for all and we happy we managed to do our part helping out our friends at Cloth n Clef. we had a fun time at happy hippyz. Organised by the wonderful people of threadszoo. Areps n Dee gave out those hippy head bands for the stallholders..and the colorful stickers designed by Areps..We had fun sticking em everywhere haha...there were bands playing too and yours truly did his part with The Stoned Revivals. We did not get to jam prior to the gig but we had lotsa fun anyways..If i remembered, the crowd was not as much compared to the last one , maybe due to the weather or most jus feeling lazy perhaps to head outdoors..but nonetheless everything went fine..and we made some sales from our toys..and met wonderful people...wasn't Haight i must say but the vibe was sweet enuff...

yeah...we organised the second disko papan to good response..last minute addition "tenderfist "were awesome!simple trio of nazri n his two other mates played geeky style experimental indie which was pleasent and dreamy at times laden with sweet feedback and sampled glitches..def a sweet suprise as opening..second act my old friends from across the border..Johnny Shameless and His Minions were as expected of a scum rock band. Clad in stripped down bondage gear ,(they couldn't bring in their full metal gear cross the customs)luchador masks..tattoos and a heavy,raw sound , they were something to be reckoned with. Disciples of GG Allin they kicked ass..i especially enjoyed watching these old mates of mine onstage and Johnny's lewdness.Third up were "Destroy All Monsters", also another band from the Lion City.Formerly a three piece with Rizal Drill grooving on distorted bass, for this gig he switched to guitars instead and added Din from Straits Records , replacing him on bass duties. Andz the Russian Tomcat did not disappoint on throats. Screaming along to the death disco beats and groove heavy tunes. If they added some sax they would sound a bit like the Rapture..Fourth up, Killeur Calculateur..KC to their followers..The Killeurs to me hahah..I have read a lot about their band in mags like Junk..etc..but knowing me, i had to see it for myself..dun believe the hype..and what better way than at a gig that i myself organised haha. Smek being an old friend back from the days when i was still living in Singapore and having seen him before in action with Custom and Sgt. weeners..i was not suprised when him n gang rocked the stage. Crowd sing-alongs, the coordinated shouts ala Fugazi..melodic but short, sharp and catchy.They are a must see band live..definitely having both the style and hooks much needed in a watered down and corporate brown nosing so-called "indie "scene of late. Yours truly, me n my mates in my KL version of the Stoned Revivals were up next..Iwont say much bout our set cos i would feel funny talking bout myself..i'm not into that..what i would say though is that i was jus happy onstage with Jeff, Haekel and Alang who jus got back from Australia..and many thanks to Jason for helping Nikotina with the soundcheck..Headlining this time was Arabyrd..this funky lass kicked up a storm and brought the house down..thanks arafah! Aimee (my other half in nikotina) asked her if she could repeat her Bartop singing action like she did on Hallows Eve at Cnc..and she did not disappoint us! She managed to bring back the crowd who did not realise there was another act after my set..Her funky freestyle and way cool bar top dance (not the cheesy sleazy pat pong kind , mind u) ended the night on an infinite high.. topped off by a fantastic Dj set..On behalf of Nikotina, I sincerely thank all those who came to support the freak scene..Ethaya, Jason,Ray,Lim and Sham from Cloth n Clef..the people who came n listened without prejudice..and especially the bands who played their hearts out..not for the money but for the love of music...peace to all..Slowjaxx (Nikotina Freak Team)

We had a whole lotta fun indeed at Urbanscapes 2008! The Nikotina Collectibles Freak Team and our good friends from Hysteria were part of the Threadszoo tent..We sat, drank, sold our souls and lost a few kilos from the heatwave...yours truly, Slowjaxx did a short slot at the Acoustic livehouse together with Lisa Foo doing her thang with the tapdancing, jus a simple jam together..Big thanks to the many people we got to know and those who bothered to check out our stuff..cheers!!
